Vector fields, divergence theorem and stokes theorem.
Electrostatics; Coulombs law, Electric field and potential, Gauss Law, spherically distributed charge. Potential equation, Poisson's and Laplace's equation.
Conductors, surface charge, capacitors, Energy considerations energy of point charges and dipoles, interactions, energy of distributed charge field energy.
Potential theory; uniqueness theorem Images, Green's reciprocal theorem.
Diclectrics, phenomenological theory, boundary condition.
Method of images.
Steady currents in conductor, currents and fields; energy and reciprocal theorems.
Amperes dipole law, circuital law, Biot-Sovert law, vector potential. Inductors, self and mutual inductance solenoids, elementary circuit theory.
Alternating current theory, complex impedance.
Magnetic Media, Boundary conditions and simple problems.
Faraday's law of induction, Maxwell's displacement current, Maxwell's equations (summarised). The wave equation, time harmonic fields. Poynting vector and energy flow.

Assessment is by assignments and examination.

Prerequisite: PHS 203.
